Early refrigeration equipment from the early 1900’s used Ammonia and carbon Dioxides as the refrigerant working fluid. These natural refrigerants have returned in popularity recently due to concerns about Climate change and pollution.

We have been working with natural refrigerants since the 1970’s for industrial processes. We have the experience and knowledge of system design and safety issues.

Safety issues recognised today include the off-site consequences of an accidental refrigerant escape and the following regulations;

· Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR) 2002.

· The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.

· Provisions and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) 1998.

· Pressure Equipment Regulations 1999.

· Pressure System Safety Regulations (PSSR) 2000.

A DSEAR risk assessment on all existing ammonia refrigeration plants will ensure compliance with the explosive atmosphere regulations and gives quantitative figures relating to the frequency and consequence of an Ammonia escape, and provides valuable data for use in the planning and implementation of emergency response procedures.
